About the Artist

Martin Whittam is a British contemporary painter known for his distinctive interpretations of Northern life. Born in Lancashire in 1961, his work is deeply rooted in the character, humour, and everyday rhythms of towns and cities across the North of England.

After studying Fine Art at Liverpool Art School, Martin spent over three decades in education, eventually becoming Head of Art and Design. Throughout this time, he continued to paint, refining a unique visual language that blends observation, memory, and imagination. Today, he works as a full-time artist, dedicating himself entirely to his practice.

Martin’s paintings are instantly recognisable for their naïve style, rich detail, and narrative charm. His scenes often depict bustling streets, local shops, pubs, and communities—capturing moments that feel both familiar and timeless. There is a strong sense of nostalgia in his work, but also warmth and gentle humour, inviting viewers to find their own stories within each piece.

Working primarily in watercolour and acrylic, Martin creates compositions that are both carefully structured and full of life. His approach celebrates the overlooked details of everyday environments, transforming ordinary places into engaging visual stories.

His work is held in private collections across the UK and internationally, reflecting a growing appreciation for his distinctive perspective on British life.

Martin continues to paint from his studio, inspired by the landscapes, architecture, and communities that have shaped his life and work.
